  1. Go figure, I am yet again the first to post on the blog. This movie so far to me is weird, original, and good. There is so much depth to it and it is actually quite entertaining. It is funny how I was not wanting to see this movie and I am liking it. It brings a lot in to perspective to me on how the gay community is treated and how it was for me coming out. Yeah I grew up in an LDS family and it has been tough living a lie trying to be happy, but coming out really was the best thing, so in a way I feel I can relate to Joseph's character. The hiding tearing you apart cause it does.
Homosexuality is looked down on in society and religion very much and it always has been, and I'm sure always will. But all someone like me can do is smile and live with it.
I would love there to be a change, but there probably won't be for a LONG time.
Some of you might by thinking, "Wait, wasn't this the oober offended guy from the last blog?"
Haha yup it is, but what can I say. I'm just me. I don't hate people or any of their choices, I may in fact be the most open minded ever, and I find it amazing how these movies have got me to open up and think about things.
The movie in general is entertaining, thought provoking, and dramatic. Super long I might also add... 6 effing hours! Wow. Well can't wait for part two!

  2. Well I don't really know what to say about this show yet, so far I am still a little confused about it. I do get that it is about diversity. But I haven't got the main point yet. Perhaps I'll have to wait for part 2. So far all that I understood is that is about Joe coming out of the closet, Roy Cohn being "homo" and having aids, Louis being a coward for leaving his lover Prior Walter because of aids. All in all i have to say that the acting was great, specially Al Pacino and Meryl Streep.

  3. All I know is that after watching that, I was nervous to use the public restroom in fear of catching a virus. This film is depressing me, wait a minute, every film has. Non the less it is interesting.

New York 1980's, I amagine was a scary time for everyone with the AIDS epidemic and all. The unknown is the worst. I hope I'm not around when the next fatal desease sweeeps across america that we know little to nothing about.

AS for Mr an Mrs Buddy. I knew he liked guys when he first asked for buddy kisses and then he solidified it when he turned down orol sex from his wife.

This movie showes us again how we are culticated and molded as people growing up. We all have archetypes in us, skelitons in the closet, and yes we all lie. It's a painful thing to suppress something thats at core of your being.

The movie show once again, how powerful

  4. We have been asked to share our initial gut reaction to part one of Angels in America, presumably to defer a more analytical response after watching the conclusion next Thursday. I find my feelings regarding this film particularly difficult to quantify, because I had such an emotional reaction. Because of personal experiences with friends and family, the subject matters in Angels in America drove me to extreme emotional distress bordering on depression. I spent probably a third of the screening crying, as well as much of the evening once I arrived home.

Don’t mistake me, the film is really excellent and multi-layered, and not offensive in the thoughtful treatment of its subject matter. It is simply difficult for me to watch the two main story lines without identifying those experiences with ones of close family and friends of the family whose lives have some parallels. I suspect that this is a film I will have a very difficult time watching (as my uncle, a Massachusetts native, had watching The Perfect Storm); the wounds are a bit too raw for much introspection.

This is made perhaps more difficult precisely by the exemplary acting, because not only are these characters who are suffering terrible events, but they are very, very human at the same time. I can recall how fear of death inspired truly irrational and occasionally selfish behaviors. When I see this playing out in the movie, I understand and it hurts in a way I can’t explain.

In the same way, watching Joe and Harper’s struggle also hit home painfully. I suspect I would have had a much harder time had the couple actually had any children, adding yet another parallel. Having known those who deny themselves and live lies for years in sham marriages, the tragedy of their marriage, with its complications and true mutual affection is heartbreaking.

People have remarked that all of the movies we have watched have been depressing, but I have not found that to be actually true until this week. While I doubt that I will fail to enjoy the film on its merits, some part of me does not look forward to part two next week.

  5. Hello all. i think it is my turn to comment. i am also not quite sure what to say about the movie. i know that me and my wife were both watching the clock wondering why time was frozen in place for most of the movie. i agree that the acting was very good and that even though the main plot seems to have not yet been revealed that there is quite a bit of intrigue. the duality in the characters is very interesting and i truly feel for Harper. she is trying so hard to escape from her life, but until the end of this first part she really didn't know what she was trying to escape from. also i am wondering about the message that is to be delivered by the angel?? she is the same actor as the nurse and there may be a connection between the message and AIDS. or AIDS might be the message and it is to be proclaimed by pryer and the medical community...also it seems that the only people so far that see the "ghosts/angels" have AIDS. this is another connection that has not been fully explored or explained. as for the duality in mister Cohn, here we see how perception is so important. i thought that the explanation he give his doctor was very good and is very applicable to real life. Joe is a little disturbing in the movie, but i have met a couple men that had very similar circumstances in real life. married and then decided that they really were gay and then went on with the life they felt was the one that they wanted. i think that the movie is also trying to deal with some established stereo types too. what they are really trying to do with them, i don't know yet, but there are many different stereotypes that are in the movie. well i will be there for the conclusion, to whatever end it may be. lol

  6. Well, I have to say that when I heard this movie was 6 hours long, I about tore my ears off... I am a little confused at this point of the movie. Partly because I had a hard time staying awake. And partly because the movie seems to be on acid or something of the sort.

The subject of AIDS, Homosexuality and Gay/Lesbian Rights is a touchy subject, especially in the highly LDS populated state we live. I was born into and raised into a Catholic family. I have since fallen away from the Catholic religion and am now LDS. But find the thought of Alienating discriminating shocking and mind boggling. Especially coming from a society that is supposed to be accepting of everyone.... As did Christ. (uh, oh, back to the previous movie)
In no way is it different than the segregation of blacks, latinos, or any other minority. Yet somehow there is a group of people that try to justify this as a belief. . . (crock of shit if you ask me) So does that mean that we are allowed to discriminate someone of another color or race, or religion simply because we "believe" that we should or can? I think not. Sorry ranting and raving on my opposition to proposition 8... Cant wait to see part 2

  7. I figured out what movie we were watching before class and had seen a few clips on you tube so I already knew it was gonna be strange... but i didn't realize this strange. im still trying to sort out the message of the film and probably will be even after the movie is over.
The whole idea of AIDS is a very scary thing to me. It is an automatic life sentence. It worries me about my homsexual friends and makes me want to pull them aside and say be careful! like (pryer's ex lover and now joe's new lover) was in the park and he didn't even care. im sure he was just upset, but seriously. if i was a gay guy I'd require a screening before anyone touched me ha ha.
as for the movie... its very visual... its left me with all sorts of "fun" images to store and entertain over the week. I think Al pacino is doing a fantastic job! and ive been wondering when Joe will find Harper in the fridge... surely after she has already died for hes off "playin" with whats his name! hope i can sort all this out in my mind later so i can put it in a file marked 'Do Not Open unless on drugs'...

  8. This movie is a crack up, it has really clever humor and they hit the stereotypes perfectly, which makes it even more funny. I agree with April Gardener, and how she described the movie an "multi-layered." It has me hooked and I can feel for many of the characters not just one. I need to see the second part to decide how I truly feel about the film, the first part is not enough, it defiantly has that leave you hanging feel after your done watching it, I cant wait for the second.

JUST FOR PEOPLES INFORMATION: STRAIGHT PEOPLE CAN GET AIDS TOO

  9. Hello.
Most times I have a hard time judging a story until it is finished. This might explain why I despised Pirates of the Caribbean 2. So it is hard for me to say if I like this show or not. It is weird that is for sure, but I do enjoy the very subtle humor thrown in from time to time. The prophet character is my favorite so far. His attitude during these hard times is actually quite positive, even though his character doesn't seem to think that. So far this is a good movie that seems to be based in reality. It is sad though to watch various families get torn apart. Hopefully everything comes our semi okay in the end.

  11. So this movie is insane. It is also quite a funny movie at the same time. So far reading into this movie all i am getting is dont get aids its bad. Which most people already know. Oh and that people hate homosexuals and its not socially accepted especially by any sort of religious faith that they have depicted which can be true but at the same time not. I love the moromon couple in it they are hilarious especially the wife addicted to valium. She makes me laugh because i know people like that its awesome.Another problem is that we have only seen about half of it and usually in movies that is about the turning point or when you start to figure stuff out well a little past the middle. So far in this movie you just see a dysfunctional couple that is between a man and a women and a good relationship that turns bad aka the gay couple. they both have people they they really look up too. Like robert cohen or the other boyfriend and they are both very disapointed in them in the end well end of the first half. I am very interested to see how this all plays out in the end but i guess i will just have to wait until next thursday for that.

  12. You gotta love the green jello at the beginning of the movie LOL. Anyways, I must admit that I am confused to where this movie is going. I like how they touched on alot of the stereotypes so far, but I am having a hard time seeing where this is going. So far I like how they have Al Pacino as a bisexual. Then they also have the *normal* gay couple with the religous man who becomes gay. This gives us some some different backgrounds on the issue of gay people. I am so confused as to why the LDS wife and guy are in each other dreams besides that they are completely smashed on the drugs they are using, but I know there is a connection which I can not see as of now. We were told at the end of the movie that the characters are mirrors of each other. That the guy in the hospital with aids is a mirror of the wife on drugs. I have had a really hard time trying to see how besides the drug issue, or that they are both trying to escape from the lives that they are apart of. I hope that part two can answer more of my questions, but I must say I like how this movie is making me think again, so great choice.

  13. The film feels like a eclectic mix of genres but eclectic doesn't mean exeptional. The fact that it is so well done makes me feel that it should be more polarized, either tragedy or comedy not both. I honestly feel it should have been a hyper surreal comedy. but alas this isn't FLCL or Exel Saga. Those hallucinations really do make for good entertainment but they seem so, more like some obscure prophecy instead of honest to goodness medication induced hallucinations.

Oh and about the stuff about AIDS, and or being gay, the only probable reason AIDS spread among the gay community is that they didn't double bag. If you go anal you double bag it. (was that last bit too offensive?)

  14. I really wasn't intending to repost in here, but I came across some troubling misinformation. (Hooray for Catholic school, where you learn accurate information about contraception even though you're not supposed to use it. At least they're pragmatic.)

The first thing I really want to say is that wearing two condoms INCREASES the risk of breakage. Adding lubrication is what protects further against infection because it prevents condom failure, particularly in anal sex as there isn't as much natural moisture as vaginal sex. Secondly, STDs are, as Megan says, not simply a homosexual issue. One of the largest groups becoming infected today are low income women in minority areas because they don't practice safe sex due to sociological pressures.

For more information on condom usage, check out Causes of Failure:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condoms

And for general safe sex behaviors:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_sex

All of the following are considered high risk (unprotected)activities*:

    Fellatio
    Cunnilingus
    Rimming
    Ejaculation near Orifaces (various)
    Vaginal Intercourse
    Anal Intercourse

*Current according to CDC for a number of STDs and infections

  15. This HBO mini series is ok. The plot line is well done. There are just parts of it that don’t make cense. Where “angles” are coming and talking to people. I really do like the hallucination of the South Pole with the Eskimo. It is interesting to see what people do when they now that they have been living a lie, going to be in trouble with the law, or know that they are going to die. I have seen some how desperate people get when they know that they have been living a lie and have to pay the consequences of there actions. They will say or do anything to be “forgiven” of what they have done. I have also seen people that will tell you what you what to hear so that you will give them what they want. It is a crazy and wacky world we live in.

  16. This movie has so many elements in it that I dont know really what to think of it. You can really see that it derives from a play. I liked how 2 different "lifestyles" intertwine (sp).
The mormon element in it was humorous. Living a lie like that is especially hard when so much pressure is put on from religion and family and such. He needed to grow a pair and done it sooner to have avoided such a situation.
His wife was funny too with the hallucinations and all, especially when she and the gay gay with AIDS was trying to be happy by dressing drag.
Im looking forward to seeing the rest of the film.
The kiss at the end (at the park) was pretty gross. But if they liked it, so be it.

  17. My intitial reaction to Angels in America was, "Geeh I really love drugs.". Not to say that this is a movie about drugs or was even inspired by drugs, but it sure would have been great to have some at the time. Anyway, i really do wish I was as perceptive Don Bjelde, most of the deeper subtext goes right over my head. I noticed that Merril Streep coming as the Angel of Death"maybe?" seemed to indicate revenge in the case of Al Pacino, also her arrival in New York might symbolize that the end is near in many different respects. That's all I can muster right now maybe I can do better at the end. I've really enjoyed the movie so far.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I loved the hallucinations. (Other than the statues that moved. They should've been done in grey stone, rather than white). If they're in an in-between place, they could've used more shades of grey.
The gay biker's bitch-slap was astounding.
Merryl Streep's bit with the bum was awe-inspiring. The bum started SAYING what Merryl was THINKING. FANTASTIC!

So, the Angel is coming down to pass judgement on a homosexual. Uh-oh! He better have insurance. And hopefully it's a better policy than Chuck & Larry's.

  19. The movie for me was a hard one to follow. I did see a few things that seemed to correlate between some of the main characters though. First Roy Cohn while at the doctor’s office refused to admit that he had aids stating that aids were for fags and druggies. Two of the main characters, one being gay and the other being addicted to drug, are connected throughout the movie through dreams and hallucinations. The other two main characters seem to be trying to get away from their mates due to these problems. Hopefully the second half of the movie will clarify a little more for me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. This movie has been one of the more interesting movies I have ever watched. How the characters meet in each others hallucinations is quite fascinating. It really makes me wonder where or how these two characters will be linked together by the end.

It was also rather interesting to watch a movie about a LDS man who is fighting his
"inner demons." The struggle he fights internally between his religious beliefs and personal happiness.

There are alot of different stories occuring throughout the movie. Each story has been different, but they are all connected in some way. i can see why this is a 6 hour movie. Hopefully the second half of the movie is going to be engaging and will finally connect all of these characters together.

  21. this movie made me sooo uncomfortable!! I did think it was really funny and weird though. it definately isn't anything that I would ever watch for fun. I am kinda looking forward to watching the next part. I'm extited to see if the angel is real or if it is purely imagaination. and I don't think that it is fair for the gay guy to marry a girl to cover up his secret. he has runied both of their lives now and he doesn't care. I would do drugs too if me husband didn't want to do me cause he was in to guys. YUCK

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, this was a weird one for me. Well done though I might add. It's always tough to understand when people or someone very close to you has secrets that even they have difficulties understanding. We're faced with really tough and crazy decisions that we must make but, we're deeply concerned about the consequences that will follow. Usually sudden life changing disasters. I can only imagine..anyways, Joseph, while fighting the fact that he was a homosexual, he wanted to remain true to his religion beliefs for the most part, we'll see. Louis, although he loved his partner for 4 years, he abandoned him when he was most needed without hesitation. Mr. Cohn on the other hand was so caught up with all the power and clout as he calls it, that he refused to admit that he was dying from aids instead of cancer because of fear of loosing the "clout" and that fags are weak. The angle on the other hand was a nice touch I thought..looking foward for part two.

  23. Well I don't really know what to say about this movie, except that Im not really into it, so far all I can say is that I'm still very confused about everything thats happend. I do get that the movie portrays diversity, and each of the parts of the movie have some sort of metaphore, recealing a little about every single character as the movies goes from scene to scene. I still haven't got the main point yet, So far all that Im understanding is that the reason Joe and his wife are having problems is because he told her he was("cumming")(just kidding)COMING out of the closet, the famous lawyer Roy Cohn is a "homo" and has aids, Louis being a coward for leaving his lover Prior Walter, because he is infected with aids, and thats it, all in all I have to say that the acting was horrible, I lost all respect for Al Pacino, he went from being the "god father" and blasting fools in his mansion, to liking it in the booty hole. But anyways I guess Im just going to have to wait for Part 2 and hope that it gets better, because all Im feeling now is that this movie is a waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I, much like most of you am having a little bit of a harder time posting a comment on something that hasn't finished yet. However at the beginning of the film my initial thought or biased opinion could have been "why are they portraying this mormon boy as a homosexual?" Mormons can't be gay right? Wrong! As a mormon myself I know that it's just plain reality, and even the more stubborn mormons who may deny it to your face knows it's a reality. But, I must add that I do not call my wife buddy or ask her for buddy kisses.

The movie deals with a harsh reality, and for those who have actually had to deal with AIDS, this film would hit even closer to home. The new link states that the movie is all about the occurance of change in the characters. I agree, but I also see the characters as of now being extremely confused, and just trying to find their place in the world. Because of their search for meaning they all are able to witness this change in their lives that will effect them forever.

  25. So far this movie is quite entertaining. I definitely wasn’t expecting such an artistic twist with the dreaming and the bright colors. It almost feels like I'm watching a play at times. This movie (play) was based in the 80's. So when I think about the 80's I think about crack and AIDS maybe they’ll mention crack in the second half..lol. If you don’t pay attention to this movie it could get really confusing. The creator uses many parallels and juxtapositions to tell his story and it’s a very interesting way to do so.

I guess I don't see how this movie is controversial maybe I have to think about it in the time frame in which it was created. AIDS is scary and not much was known about it at that time and gays were an easy scapegoat. My sister recently came out of the closet and a lot of my own prejudices about gay women were quickly shot down. Well since this movie is only halfway through ill save more thoughts for later.

  26. I find this movie to be weird and strange. I think it is a lot of stuff that goes on in the world. I'm trying to find out what the outcome will be. I guess we will find out next week.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To my own opinion, all charactors in this film are all got psychological problems. Taking pills, thinking strange. I just can't understand some people's talk. Weird movie, let's just hope it may get good next time we watch.

Gay issue, not my concern, because that's not my business either. Many people can't stand this same-sex love, true. But we also have no rights to pushing them around.

This movie shows the harsh problem of AIDS in this world, if you don't be careful you may get it too. Hope there will be a genius to find a way to cure this cursed disease.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This movie is definaltly better then the last one we watched!! It still has its ups and downs but every movie will. Its interesting to look at all the symbols that pertain to each of us in the movie. It tells us what out deepest fears are and what we really want in life.

The thing that struck me was how louie backed out of the relationship when he found out his boyfriend had aids. It made me think of what a wimp he is!! Life is going to be tough but we all just need to stick it out to the end. No matter what comes our way!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ok here it is. You wanted our initial gut reaction. Mine was one of Total disgust. I am your typical Heterosexual man and I seriously had to close my eyes during the park sex scene. I wish I would have had ear plugs as well because that sound was enough to make me physically sick. I think that scene could have been done a little more discrete and still gotten the point across but I’m sure that “shock value” was what they were going for. As far as the subject matter is concerned, homosexual relations, aids, passions, desires love, discrimination etc. it is somewhat entertaining and informative but to what end? I think what our instructor is looking for is not so much a critique of the movie but open discussions of the related subject matter so rather than only address the movie I will also stick my neck out a little and offer some of my personal opinions as food for thought and discussion. PLEASE keep in mind that in no way do I think or feel as though God Hates Fags and neither do I, in fact I’m absolutely sure that he loves all of his children beyond any of our comprehension. That being said I do have (as I’m sure deep down we all do) very strong opinions about this subject matter. I am LDS and stand behind the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. The way God designed it from the beginning. I don’t believe that sexual preferences are genetically inherent (established at birth) and I don’t believe that simply because a person has ever been curious about gay sex or has a tendency to be more like their unnatural birth gender that makes them gay. For example, just because a person has a strong desire or curiosity to try heroine that doesn’t make them a heroine addict/junkie. It’s a choice. Will I or won’t I? Should or shouldn’t I? The question is (as with any other choice) is it right or wrong, what will be the outcome of the choice, how will it affect others, will it build up or tear down society, family, humanity etc.? In my opinion any activity that offers instant gratification combined with a high level of physical or emotional pleasure is addictive. This includes Gay as well as strait sex so once again I believe it’s a choice. As far as the topic of aids I have a tendency to believe that it MAY have actually been a consequence related to the practice of immoral sexual relations and just as any other sin inevitably affects the lives of innocent people there is those who through no fault of their own have been subject to this disease such as children etc. This being said I don’t claim to know all the purposes of God and admit that I could be wrong about the purpose of this disease but anyone who reads their bible knows that occasionally God does and will chastise his children with unsavory consequences for their choices. Does this mean he doesn’t love us? Does it mean your parents didn’t love you when they chastised you for doing something they told you not to? I think not. I have a lot more to say about all of the topics included in this segment but being that I have gone on this long and the movie is only half over I will end this here and reserve my final analysis of the movie for later.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can honestly say that I am really enjoying this film, I'm not sure exactly what the hell is going on with all the hallucinations and character overlapping and such but it is very interesting.
I think it is bs how Louise is completly abandoning his man. Ya he has AIDS and I'm sure that would be very very difficult but he has options. Talk with him and take precautions, or refraine from the risky business, break up and remain friends or something but dont abandon him.
I was kinda irritated with Roy Cohn and the scene with the doctor. He's an Ass! I can understand him making excuses in his mind so he doesn't have to admit to himself that he is a homosexual but its completly rediculous that he can just stand there and sidestep who he really is while bashing homosexuality and threatening to destroy his doctors career and reputaion. What a dick.
I love the wife, she is hilarious but shes a nut.
Great movie. Excited for the conclusion I just hope it goes a little faster than last time.

  31. I’m having a difficult time forming opinions until I see the rest of this one. I’m going to make this one short because I don’t have enough information to form an opinion. As far as gut reaction, this movie is heart-wrenching. It hurt to see people leave each other, on the other hand it is probably the best thing to happen for all parties involved. I did get a kick out of Al Pacino’s character talking about “WHO” gets AIDS. The 80’s were an interesting time for the disease, it was new and uncharted ground, many people felt that you could get it by simply sharing a drinking fountain. I find the portrayal of the era to be fairly accurate and am look forward to watching the rest of this one.

    See you all in class,
    Jeremiah

  32. As everyone else is, I think, I also am a little confused about this movie. When we were told that the movie was going to be two periods long. I was like Damn.. another boring dragged out movie. But this one is actually good! Comparing it to the previous film, this one has actors that can actually act. I find it interesting that the movie is focusing on a very serious subject (aids) and it still can add satirical humor to the topic.

I can't imagine how hard it would have been for an individual who was homosexual in the 1980's. Everyone thought aids was spreading because people were homosexual! I can picture the descrimination already! However, we can't blame them because "AIDS" was a disease that society knew a little about.

I feel like this is one of those movies that you need to see twice to actually understand it fully. As Sara said to pay attention of the actors who played two rolls in the film. There's a reason for the relationship between the actors. It has all these metaphors, allusions, and satire. (<--- props to my awesome high english teacher for teaching me what these words actually mean. haha..)

I can't wait to see the second part of this movie to fully understand the whole message it's trying to potray.

  34. this was a strange movie. Angels in America has so far given me a new perspective on homosexual lives. though i found this movie strange in many ways, i found it hard to get interested in the movie. al pacino's character is so far my favorite, and gives a good insight into how homosexuals were perceived back then.
hopefully part two will be more interesting and less strange.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Watching this movie was very interesting but strange at the same time, like moments when there were hallucinations was just awkward to me the whole setup was kind of disturbing but yet I kept my eyes peeled to the screen. I look at the world now compared to the movie and life has changed towards homosexuality and aids, many people are more aware now of it then they were before (way more aware), but I still don't understand why people look down upon homosexuality?... What rights do people have to keep someone of the same sex to be with another of the same sexuality. It's life people! Let them live there's the way they want it and we'll live ours the way we want it, I swear if people could look past it there would be less controversy's between people in the U.S.

As for AIDS right now their are people who still don't understand the meaning and what it does to you, what it does to there lover or friends. I've seen couples break up just because of it. I don't understand it, if you love someone wouldn't you stick by there side no matter what? no matter what happens.. The movie touched on a few perspectives of it, but I haven't seen enough of the movie yet to fully understand the concept. Hopefully I get some of my questions answered in Part 2. =)

    ReplyDelete
  36. This movie was definitely on the weird side. All the hallucinations were pretty crazy and unexpected. This subject is a tender one in the world, even today, but even more so back in the 80's. But so far it's been interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am not sure about this movie... I can’t tell what message it is trying to imply, but I am sure it will be something that will cause controversy... We are in a controversial film class. (I'm sorry that was a stupid comment).

As for gut reactions...I don’t particularly like this movie... At all. I would not watch it ever again. I DO like that it has something to portray and I like that there is deeper meaning involved. I really enjoy thinking about the allusions and metaphors. It will be interesting to find out what they really mean. But I think I will keep all judgments of the movie to myself until the ending. I cant wait for the ending... not because I am excited to know what happens but that I am excited for it to be over and done with and I know I don’t have to sit through it again.

  38. Angels in America so far seems to be an alright movie. I think its a bit weird but everything in the class has been that way so far. I guess I'm not really sure what the whole movie is leading up to but if Joe the Mormon/gay guy gets aids I'm gonna be pissed. What I cant get is why the Joe didn't eat the sandwiches that Roy Cohn was trying to give him. I mean I can understand him turning down a blow job from his wife for the fact that hes gay but I cant get how he could turn down free food. Well maybe I could only for the reason that Roy Cohn only offered him a sandwich and no beverage. Roy Cohn? what a dick, not offering him something to drink with his sandwich that is freaking outrageous.

  39. This movie is really hard to follow because it moves around alot and has a lot of very modern artistic hallucinations. I am a little angry that the writter chose to have an LDS male be the hidden homosexual. A lot of people outside of Utah don't know much about the religion and I just hope they don't get any ideas that the husband is always hiding something and the wife is always addicted to something for trying to be good. People in every religion has secrets they try to hide. I just found it really frustrating and interesting that they chose my religion. At this moment I couldn't give you the exact story line of this movie. It has a lot of great characters and thoughts and it displays life very realistically but it just has too much craziness. I need more structure in a movie to have it be memorable and all that comes to my mind when I think of this movie are those legions and that icky park scene. So I have a lot of mixed emotions about this movie obviously and I really cannot tell you whats going on.

  40. So far I think that this is pretty interesting. It seems as if you get different points of view from all sorts of people and their lifestyles. I like the diversity and the changes that are happening to these people because it happens in real life and I think that people need to be more accepting. I am missing the class right now because I am sick so I will have to rent the second half because I'm really interested on what is going to happen.

  41. After watching the first part of the movie, there were a few loose ties i felt to it that i figure will be later disclosed in the second half. But, overall, i think i had a firm grasp on what the movie is portraying through each character and their struggle that do, as mentioned in class, mirror eachother and how the character is able to sometimes cope or deal with their given situation. For instance, with Harper, she escapes to her own world for a matter of time to help cope with the problem she is going through with her husband as is Prior with trying to find where everything fits and trying to make sense of the "messenger". Finally, at times it was confusing in the movie how there would be some sort of climax or important piece of information that would surface then switch scenes into a different character. Definitely an interesting movie so far.

  42. Where to begin......well while this film wasn't anywhere near as depressing as the last I am happy to say this one was far more palatable. It seemed semi shakespearian to me mainly due to some of the dialogue. My favorite character had to be Pryor by far. His freak outs were my favorite. He did have an unusual countenance about him throughout his whole deterioration however; very positive. As far as the plot of the whole show goes I am super lost and confused. I could see some of the 'mirroring' between characters but its pretty wishy washy for me. I don't understand most of the symbolism at all or what the point of the firey angel was in boning Pryor and Granny Pitt? Maybe those Angels Are Are Are Are Are as sex deprived as Joe's wife? Freaking green jello was a subtle tribute to Mormons but she made it wrong! Ice cubes? Its nit picky but I'm having fun. I'm pretty sure I am as confused as some of those characters are in the film. Not in the sense of what I want in life but--like Joe and Luis--their confusion only amplified mine. You're both gay you both know that you want what you can't have so stop whining about it and get on with life the best you can. Of course I don't understand how the gay mind works so their issues are beyond me. And Al Pacinos character is a genuine, grade A asshole!

  43. so this movie feels like i am reading some ancient text or a foreign language, i am starting to understand it but the language they use sometimes makes absolutly no sense, how could you go from stoner hippies to beyond colligate wording in less than a few years, to clear it up i have NO idea what was going on the first class period but the second kinda brought it all together.

The symbolism was so far over my head i was absolutely drowning in it. i have never had to try and think about a movie before and the message that the director was trying to get across. most of the movies now you can follow pretty easy so i was not used to it.

  44. I thought it was a interesting first part, it could get confusing at times with all of its symbolism and mirror characters and I think the fact that we were watching it episode after episode, is what made it confusing. What I got from the first part was mostly the similarities between characters, like Harper and Prior, Joe and Roy but I could not fully grasp what the story was trying to tell until I saw the second part of the series.

  46. I thought this movie was funny same time past so slow. I do not know how to say but it was weird. I did not understand what they were trying to tell in this movie. And I was keep thinking that why title of this movie is angel in America. I know only little bit about AIDS. We do not know how to cure AIDS yet, and there are lots of people suffering from Aids for reality. It was sad that Louis left his boyfriend because of disease. He should have taken care of his boyfriend, He cannot help him to feel better, but he could support him mentally. I think it was hard for people who are homosexual to go hospital to show that they are Aids. I know there are still lots of people who discriminate gay people for no reason. I do not like to see guy kissing or girls kissing each other in public, but I do not mind being friends with them.

  47. This movie is Gay. I have definitely noticed a trend throughout most of the films we watch in this class though. Most of them have had a gay aspect to them, Jfk, Kevin bacons character, American history X, The rape in the shower scene, and now this angels in America. Seems like this class should be called Film and Gays. Not film and culture. At the park scene I was just like are you kidding me? What in the world Is this person making us watch? So far Im not at all impressed with the selection of films we've been watching, Jfk was alright, American history X was good, other two sucked and it seems to be going downhill. So yeah the class sucks. But im entitled to my opinion just like everyone else.

  48. This part of the film was an interesting outlook on homosexuality in the Americas. I am a bit confused about the whole angel thing and why people are in each others dreams. I do think that AIDS is a scary thing and would be hard to see your partner get it. This film is kind of boring as well but we will see what happens next.

  49. i wasnt quite sure what to make of this film so far, the symbolism and metaphors were a bit over my head sad to say, the portryal of prior and his lover as well the mormon who turned gay seem to parallel one another in that there is something deeper inside them.. prior a prophet? and the mormon a homosexual struggling against his upbringing, which is saying "if you are homosexual you are going to hell" i have heard and seen many sides of the spectrum to homosexuality, and it seems appropriate of those who do not believe in gay marriage to say "do not hate the person, hate the sin", on the opposite end as this film portrrays its saying "if you hate what i am then you hate me", thus prejudice gets reversed. i have completely cluttered my thoughts in this post so forgive me if its hard to understand. cant we all just get along?

  50. I find it ironic and somewhat cliche that a movie about homosexuality and AIDS has a homosexual Mormon in it. Having had strict Mormon friends in the past, I have heard first-hand their views on homosexuality, and it is not pretty. Mormons already have the label of "gay-haters" if you will. I think its rather cliche that they include the Mormons in this as they have that stereotype. Of course, HBO loves to poke fun at Mormons, just look at Big Love. I would assume 95% of the class wouldn't have watched this movie on their own, as it is rather in your face with the homosexuality, much like Brokeback Mountain. I find the movie interesting and its not like seeing a movie about gays makes me gay, or letting them get married would fuck up my marriage

  51. i really liked the first of this movie. especially the awkward funny moments. it brought to light what aids is like though, i did not know it had that much effect on your physical body. i thought it was all just about your blood cells.

  52. ANGELS in Amarica is real. I don't They try to promote themself in order to survive in Society. I take appciation and respect for them. As long the majority of people still rule and bring greater colonies. It is impossibe But I think, These is a easy issuse to work with in the future, of couse.
Think you the director of this movie went to throat us off the track. Let me straight forward about this. This is serious topic eventhought this is kida interesting and wire movie for me. If me the sense of some discusding part.

  53. Yay finally a movie that shows what I think the real mormon marriage is SECRETS! I love how they show the completely different lives of two different kinds of couples. I especially like how prior and harper are so much alike and are meeting each other in their hallucinations. Also how Joe and Louis are so much alike yet so different at the same time.

  54. The first part of the movie was a little confusing. It was very random! It had two stories going on and it took a long time before they kinda came together. I have never known anyone with AIDS so I didn't know that it could be that hard on someone. It was really sad and disturbing at the same time. Also, I thought that harper and joe's relationship was really sad. A lot of couples in this world are in bad situations like they were.

  55. I enjoyed the first half of the movie, it was funny, and kept me interested. with as many story arcs and symbols it was confusing. the stroy was very well done. I didn't know anything about roy chone before watching this... he pretty much an asshole...

  56. alot of symbolism some what hard to understand. Very good acting very entertaining. Hopefully the 2nd part makes it all come together, because as of now i'm lost but, very good.

  57. Overall great movie, didn't fall asleep to much during this movie. It kept me laughing, kept me smiling. Guess I'm more interested in newer movies vs those made in the 1980's etc...
The movie showed a lot about gay's and one turning gay, very interested how louis left his boyfriend a little after he found out he had aids. It just shows how dangerous aids can be and how quickly people can turn on you.

There was gay sex scene that took place in the park, which I found to be very disturbing, to have never seen a scene like that in any more or in real life, and I hope I never have to again. I personally have nothing against gay's if they don't hit on me or touch me or show any affection toward me, than I am perfectly fine with them. Because I have two gay friends and they are just about the funniest people I know and it is great being around them.

I don't know anyone with AIDS, but it looks very hard to deal with. Hopefully everyone stays safe. =]

  58. This was by far the most confusing movie that we have watched so far. At parts of it I felt like I was starting to understand what was going on, but then a twist would come along, or one of the characters would show up in some other role in the movie and leave me wondering what was going on again. I thought that it was well portrayed how Joe handled his feelings with same gender attractions. It was like he knew how he felt, but also knew how he was expected to be..."normal". In the LDS community, we often struggle with how to react to persons who do not live up to this "norm", so we, as a whole, shun the very people we should embrace. Does it not make sense that if you feel a person is doing something "wrong" (in your own opinion), that you should reach out to them? But instead, it seems that we, as a whole, look down on that person. It must be very hard for someone to come out and tell there family that they are gay. Not knowing how they will be received by their own family. I personally have my own feelings on the notion of being gay...but I can still, and I do still, treat those who choose that lifestyle with love and respect. Because in the end, it is their choice, not mine.

  59. I particularly don't care for the movie. I believe that sex should only be between a man and a woman. That doesn't mean that I hate on the gay population. Even though I don't agree with it, I am not going to hate them as a human being. I wasn't in class for the first part, so I had to rent the movie to better understand the end. I can understand how people could have been a little confused by the first part, when trying to figure out where the movie was going. I could have gone without the sex scene in the park. That was a bit disturbing for me to watch. I suppose I will leave the rest of my thoughts for the second blog.

  60. Wow what a interesting show, who comes up with these mini series? And i find it interesting that so many things we watch have to have a "Mormon" roll in it. Perhaps your just trying to push a lot of peoples buttons. I don't find this series entertaining at all, as a matter of face i find myself somewhat depressed leaving class wishing i hadn't seen it. Gay and Lesbians is such a hot topic right now, why this stuff sales so well in hollywood is beyond me. Everyone has their own opinion on it and mine is in disagreement. With that being said, everyone has their own free agency and they can do what they want with out me interfering, i will only interfere when it effects me. like when law that is passed accepting it, that effects me and how my children will be tough in school and how my no profit donations will effected because my church isn't accepting of it as well. all in all i'm kind of sick of the topic and really tired of watching this mini series as well.

  61. The first part of this movie is rather boring. I have absolutely no idea where it is going. I hope the whole movie isn't just about how aids is bad and only gays get it. I was a little confused on how one person could play a couple roles, but there's got to be some point to it. I hope it goes into more detail in the second half. I'm not too impressed.

  62. I really don't like this movie because it is so damn confusing and has to many things going on at once. All I got out of it was a gay mormon who is left his wife, a gay guy with aids, a mafia man who might be gay, and two other gay guys running around from scene to scene. My head hurts from listening to all their quick witted come backs and sarcasms. Next MOVIE please!
